Jack Frost on the Way

We have had lots of guests lately. I had hoped that my beautiful flowers would last until all the company was gone. And guess what? The day after the last visitors left, the impatiens and begonias turned to mush. Now we (my wonderful yard man and I) will have to pull them all up. I hate to violate them, but my son John says, "Mom, you can't be greedy; now you can plant pansies."

I have always enjoyed working in the yard. Advancing back issues have changed my ability to plant; I can bend over but getting back up is quite a challenge. So my yard man, who is good at both tasks, is indispensable. However, it still requires both of us because he is visually impaired. My friend Ann says, "Depend on Jane to have a yard man who is disabled." So I point and he plants. We also exchange plants because he loves flowers as much as I do.

I say to Billy: "Billy, look at these beautiful flowers!" With his amazing patience, he replies softly, "Mom, I DID look."
